Venue: Away

This fixture carried the extra weight of being the second round of the National cup competition. Although having trained well for the last few weeks team preparation has been hindered due to limited whole squad sessions.

Clearly a large number of natural athletes and good sportsman in the squad, there were glimpses of excellent individual skill and great running. Where we were let down was with getting continuity and putting phases together. Ball carriers were not supported at the tackle, thus resulting in many turnovers. When players were there to ruck they were too static. In addition body positions and ball retention in contact were poor. Having said all this this it was still a game that we should have won, but did not.

We went in at half time 7-5 up after a try by Chu and a successful conversion by Hugh. We certainly dominated the first half but were left frustrated by 3 knock ons when over the try line and half a dozen overlaps that were not used.

We started well in the second half scoring from a lineout on half way and successfully move the ball through the backs resuming in Chu finishing off in the corner, 12-5. We managed another try, this time by Lani which was converted by Luke. (19-5). After this the game so what got away from us. Isolated runners were getting turned over, passes were not going to hand and with only a couple of minutes left Watford had managed to level up the scores at 19-19. After some strong defence on our own line we have a penalty away in front of the posts that was successfully converted, resulting in a 19-22 loss.

Lots to work on but no time as our next match is against Bancrofts on Tuesday.

Player of the match- Rex for his counter attack running from fullback, his passing and strong defence

Work ones:

Support of ball carriers

Dynamic and effective rucking

Depth of running and support lines

Two waves of attack (Rather than one flat line)

Completion of overlaps

Confidence in completing 2/3 phases of play
